BEM FEB UNISMA held a Journalism Training

Wednesday (29/6/2022) at the Multimedia Lab, 3rd Floor, FEB UNISMA Building. The activity, which was held in Hybrid, was attended by representatives from each Student Activity Unit and Professional Activity Unit FEB UNISMA as well as offline participants who also joined via Zoom media. Carrying the theme "Journalism for All," this activity aims to introduce journalism and teach basic techniques in writing articles or news, complete with explanations about photojournalism later.

Nur Diana, S.E., M.Si., the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Islam Malang, explained that this training is a very important activity because it is in line with the vision and mission of FEB UNISMA, which is currently focusing on improving human resource capabilities not only in accordance with the competence of the field of science but also in terms of soft skills.

Diana further said that FEB UNISMA needed the role of all units under it, including student activity units, to present quality information to the public. Moreover, FEB UNISMA will now have many collaborations with print and electronic media so that Unit academics have enough space to publish tri dharma activities on the local campus.

"This Journalism Training is here to help students understand journalism which is very useful in everyday life. He said that as a consumer of information, journalistic knowledge is also needed to filter and criticize information circulating in various media," she explained.

According to the Dean, who has experience as Chief Editor of LPM MEI at FEB UNISMA, everyone can write but not necessarily be able to describe information accurately, quickly, and according to journalistic rules. For this reason, this training is very important to develop linguistic skills, both in verbal and written communication.

"The power of writing will destroy because of the negative influence of writing; on the contrary, the power of good writing will produce positive changes," said Diana

FEB UNISMA will soon launch the Journalism Study Group, where later journalism will be included in every Student Activity Unit, not only in the form of one Student Activity Unit. In this digital era, it is important to publish every activity that has been carried out.

"Not just writing, the writer must also be like the reader. So that the writings submitted can attract many people," said Irham Thoriq, CEO of Tugu Media Group. He also conveyed the basic techniques of writing, which included explaining the structure of writing, and editing to the journalistic code of ethics.

Journalism should indeed be included in the world of education. We can start publishing various things related to education; achievements achieved, superior programs, and implementation of activities for student and student admissions. "Student participation in journalistic activities provides very important benefits for educational institutions. In addition, through this, it can also develop critical, logical thinking skills, and organizational skills as well as conducting interviews," he said.

In addition to material on news writing techniques and how to collect data, participants also received knowledge related to photojournalism.

The General Manager of Tugu Jatim, Bayu Eka, gave his experience as a professional photographer. “Developing the world of photojournalism takes time and experience. There are so many demands, for example, that there should be no repetition of characters that are too frequent. A photo has a functional aspect; in photography, we also sometimes put aesthetics second and prioritize the content of the story in the photos we take. A photo must describe the news we want to convey,” said Bayu Eka.

By holding this training, students are expected to be able to present quality information to the public; they must know that they also need to publish the Tri Dharma of higher education. The writing that is made must be a writing that has the power so that it can produce a positive change or impact on the audience.
